Malaysia Begins Repatriating Myanmar Nationals Aboard Naval Vessels
The group consists of 1,370 men, 79 women, 20 boys and seven girls between the ages of eight and 60, according to Malaysia’s Home Ministry deputy secretary-general Makhzan Mahyuddin.
The individuals were selected from 14 immigration detention centers after Myanmar authorities verified their identities. Their names were then formally submitted to Malaysia through a diplomatic note issued on Aug. 13.
Malaysian authorities said the repatriation is voluntary and follows procedures agreed upon by the two countries.
Before their departure, the returnees underwent medical examinations and identity checks before being transferred to the Royal Malaysian Navy base in Lumut.
They are traveling aboard the Myanmar naval vessel UMS Moattama, accompanied by UMS King Sin Phyu Shin and the hospital ship UMS Thanlwin, according to reports.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced last month that Myanmar had agreed to receive 5,000 of its nationals from Malaysia. Following the agreement, Malaysia’s Home Ministry began the process of identifying and screening those eligible for return.
