UNICEF Highlights Rising Risks to Children in Ukraine, Myanmar
UNICEF spokesperson Ricardo Pires told reporters in Geneva that Ukrainian students have faced an average of 34 hours of air raid alerts during school hours since the beginning of the 2026-2027 academic year. This accounts for more than 13% of their scheduled learning time.
Air raid warnings were recorded on nearly two-thirds of school days in September and October, compared with approximately one-third over the corresponding period last year.
In the Dnipropetrovsk, Pirovodrad and Kharkiv regions, more than 560,000 children endured over 60 hours of school-time alerts, equivalent to roughly one-quarter of their planned classroom hours.
The UN has documented nearly 2,000 attacks on educational facilities across Ukraine, including approximately 270 incidents so far this year.
"Children must be protected from attacks, and every child has the right to learn in safety," Pires said, cautioning that an entire generation could fall behind in its education.
Addressing the situation in Myanmar, Pires raised concerns over reports that an airstrike on Oct. 31 struck a school hosting displaced families in Loikaw Township, Kayah State, killing three children and injuring five.
Additional reported attacks in Rakhine State over the weekend included a strike on a temporary healthcare center that reportedly killed a newborn and several healthcare workers.
